Johannesburg - A rhino and her calf were found shot dead and stripped of their horns on a farm near Mookgophong (Naboomspruit) by the Limpopo police's stock theft unit, Beeld reported on Monday.

The four-month-old calf also had its toenails pulled out. They were killed with hunting rifles and found this weekend.

Police also arrested the farm's 60-year-old owner and a worker on Saturday after unlicensed firearms, a pistol and hunting rifles, as well as 1944 rounds of ammunition, were found.

They were released on bail of R25 000 and expected to appear in court on Tuesday.

Police were investigating separate cases of possession of illegal firearms and rhino poaching.

A total of 140 rhino have been killed since the start of the year.
