Rhino poaching bid foiled in Kaziranga

JORHAT: Kaziranga forest guards have managed to foil a rhino poaching attempt in the Bagori range of the park on Wednesday when they fired in the air after hearing gunshots of poachers in the Gaoimari area. Though no one has been arrested so far, foresters have intensified their operation in the park.

"A group of poachers comprising three persons entered the Gaoumari area in the Bagori forest range of the park and tried to kill a rhino. They even shot one round but missed the target," said Bagori forest range officer Deven Kalita.

He added, "On hearing the sound of gunshots, we launched a search operation in the area and opened fire in air. But the poachers managed to escape in the cover of darkness." He said anti-poaching operation has been intensified in the forest range and foresters have been asked to maintain strict vigil in their respective forest camps to foil any kind of poaching attempt.
On May 9, another poaching attempt was averted by poachers at the park's Biswanathghat forest range areas when they arrested three armed poachers at Bihali area in Sonitpur district. The poachers were arrested when they tried to sneak into the park.
