Two alleged rhino poachers seek bail

Sapa 05 September, 2011 17:32

Two Limpopo men applied for bail in the Modimolle Magistrate's Court on Monday after they were arrested for rhino poaching.

Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said traffic official Phillip Mpete and co-accused Malivan Mutang would hear on Wednesday whether they would be granted bail.

The pair will remain in custody.

The SABC reported Mpete as telling the court that he dropped off Mutanga and two others at the game farm to hunt rhinos.

He said it was not the first time they were hunting the animals. Previously, they shot and killed a rhino in Mokopane.

Mpete and Mutanga were arrested in August for allegedly trying to poach a rhino at Welgevonden farm outside Modimolle.

They face charges of illegal hunting, trespassing and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
