Across the world, there are a large number of volunteering opportunities to choose from and for prospective volunteers it always remains a difficult decision to know which program to choose.

SanWild has had a number of years experience with taking in volunteers to help us with our daily tasks of resource management in the reserve and the overall aim of our program is to provide volunteers with a unique, varied and interactive African wildlife experience as opposed to being entertainment based. Honesty and being real is the ethos behind SanWild's conservation volunteer program.

As active, working volunteers, you are not seen as our "guests" or "clients" but as a part of our team. The aim is to challenge you physically, mentally and emotionally, which will lead you to experience personal growth and development.

General volunteer activities are concentrated predominantly on the resource management of the wildlife reserve. Involvement with the wildlife rehabilitation centre is strictly limited to the cleaning of enclosures and feeding of animals no longer in intensive care or in an advanced stage of rehabilitation and re-wilding. If and when emergency rescues or veterinary procedures are executed, volunteers are allowed to accompany the team in an observation status only.

At SanWild, we take animal rehabilitation extremely seriously and will therefore not compromise our rules to satisfy volunteer demands and a strict hands-off policy is applied in relation to the animals in our care. If you are therefore as serious about the welfare and quality of life of injured, orphaned or traumatized wild animals, SanWild is the project for you to support.

However our program will give volunteers a great opportunity to become acquainted with the life and daily tasks of conservationists and private game reserve staff. We trust you will leave the program having gained knowledge about ecology in all respects, with an understanding of the importance of conservation, and respect for nature. The means by which the above will be achieved is through daily active involvement with the resource management of a wildlife reserve.

LONG-TERM VOLUNTEERING OPPORTUNITIES:

From time to time, the opportunity might arise for SanWild to appoint long-term volunteers that serve a specific purpose like administrative posts, fundraising executives, special project coordinators or field rangers. These opportunities are very limited and we have a special protocol for appointing such individuals. No remuneration is paid, but accommodation and food is free.

At the moment, we have two volunteer placement opportunities available for long-term volunteers:

* Please note that only volunteers that have previously volunteered at SanWild will be considered for long-term volunteer positions or permanent employment. Unfortunately many “willing and capable” volunteers have taken us for a ride in the past and therefore we have a policy of only considering previous volunteers for long term placement.

If you are interested in the above long term volunteering positions email Louise Joubert on louise@sanwild.org

Meet Our Staff

Corporal Albert Mkhansi:

Albert Mkhansi is one of SanWild’s full time anti-poaching rangers and works to help educate volunteers about wild animals, tracking and anti-poaching techniques. Albert's favourite animals include giraffe and rhinos. His enthusiasm for his work is infectious and as a result we have agreed for him to further his studies with Wildlife Campus in 2007 as well. To read Albert’s diaries go to Anti Poaching section on the Afritrust website.
