SanWild’s volunteer program has been improved to be more project specific in relation to various direct conservation efforts relating to soil erosion and resource management. We will also be involved with a number of construction projects to improve the holding conditions for small mammals and birds that arrive at our door for help.

At the rehab centre a small mammal enclosure will be constructed as well as a new bird of prey flight aviary.  A number of research projects will be launched and we will also be addressing the problem of alien plant invasion and soil erosion. These projects will run in addition to our normal volunteer program. Limited social volunteer initiatives will also be undertaken with the local communities in relation to animal welfare and environmental education.

Although volunteers at SanWild are given the opportunity to learn about wildlife rehabilitation we have a strict hands-off policy in relation to animals in our rehab programs and volunteers are more involved with the daily resource management of the wildlife reserve. This does not mean that you do not encounter or experience wild animals closely. In actual fact, SanWild is known for its great wildlife encounters. The experience of seeing previously injured or abused animals living in their natural habitat is far more rewarding than just visiting any game reserve.

At SanWild every animal has a previous history that tells of danger, pain and suffering and each and every one of the animals saved by our program can be viewed in the reserve at close range.

Sitting at Tonga and Aldo’s dam watching the African sun go down and seeing the two rescued hippos at close range cannot be described unless you have seen it for yourself. The overwhelming emotional feelings of knowing the suffering these two hippos endured while they were living in two separate circuses in France before they were confiscated and sent to SanWild for release back to the wild is indescribable. Seeing and experiencing the joy with which they enjoy each other’s company after a life in isolation and seeing them swim and play in their own dam with no barriers, fences or humans around that want to dominate them is just so good that you have to come and experience it for yourself.

SanWild has only been in a position to help animals such as Tonga and Aldo because volunteers like yourselves have chosen to support our programs in the past and by doing to have made it possible for us to use the proceeds from our volunteer program, donations and membership fees to fund these rescues, relocations and rehabilitation projects.

From time to time we do launch project specific special offers on our volunteer program to raise funds to either rescue a specific animal or to construct more holding or rehabilitation enclosures. Presently we need to raise funds to construct a small mammal enclosure and a bird of prey fight aviary. Both these projects are urgent and to help us to raise the funds required we are offering a Bush Buddy Special to all individuals choosing to visit SanWild in 2008 as volunteers.

This is a great opportunity to not just come to SanWild, but to also be able to come with a friend at a reduced rate.
