The volunteer camp is situated alongside a large dam and has been named after a tame zebra female that lives in the immediate area around the camp.

Tshokwane has already given birth to her first foal. She was rescued after her previous owners wanted to shoot her as a so-called “problem” animal.

Tshokwane was hand raised when she was found abandoned when she was only two weeks old. Sadly, the young zebra mare became totally imprinted on people and knew nothing about being a zebra. She started damaging motor vehicles and turned into an all round nuisance.

Since arriving at SanWild, she had successfully joined up with the Animal Planet zebras and mated with one of the stallions in the Kingship group.

This rustic camp consists of six dome tents tucked away under huge Jackalberry and Tamboti trees. Only six volunteers are accommodated at any time. To reach the camp one has to use a wooden bridge suspended across a small seasonal river where both Cape clawless and Spotted-necked otters has been seen hunting for freshwater crabs and platannas (frogs).

At night the camp is lit with paraffin lanterns (no electricity here) and volunteers get a true wilderness experience. The entire camp has a security fence to keep out two very naughty brown hyenas that have been released in the area.

In the past tents have been damaged by these two fantastic creatures they have shown a tendency to be extremely energetic and naughty.

Many other wild animals can be found in the immediate area of the camping site. Impala, kudu, eland, waterbuck, bushbuck, buffalo, mongoose, bush pigs and warthogs are just some of the animals that live in this area.

During moonlit nights, volunteers in the camp hear the resident leopard’s haunting calls regularly when he patrols his territory. A wide range of birds enjoy the area around the large dam and fish eagles sit up high in the dried out trees waiting for their prey to pass by while Steppe Buzzards fly over the open plains catching termites and flying ants.

Bush cuisine is prepared in true African style under open skies around the campfire. The ablution facilities consist of open air and enclosed showers with hot and cold water and toilets.
