Wednesday 21 November

Painting

We spent Tuesday painting the outside of the new kitchen lapa in the tourist camp.....until a wonderful storm hit mid-afternoon, bringing the much-needed rain.

Wednesday was a day of errands in Tzaneen. Steve, Susanne, John and I started out intending to pick up Louise's bakkie which was being worked on and then going on to a long list of errands. However, the bakkie wasn't ready until many hours after it was supposed to be. We spent the time trying to get the other things done (grocery shopping, filing the permit for Aldo the second hippo to come from France, more floor tiles for the kitchen, picking up my airline ticket to Zimbabwe, etc.), but ended up spending a very frustrating amount of time waiting on the bakkie.

There's some very mysterious something going around.....so far Barbara, Susanne and I have been severely afflicted, and Steve is now showing signs of it as well. Our upper bodies are covered with this spreading rash-like thing.....which burns and itches like nothing I've ever experienced. It starts out in one area and daily spreads to our backs, bellies, arms, neck and even a bit onto our thighs. However, it looks much more like insect bites than a rash. Mine seems to be worse at night. I haven't slept the last two nights because of waking up about midnight with this stuff burning and itching unbearably. No one around here has ever seen anything like it, and no one knows what's causing it as neither flying insects nor something in the linens nor exposure to something in the construction area fully makes sense!
