Monday 26 November

Elephants, black dots and a baby rhino

I arrived last Monday after 24 hours of travelling. I was met at Phalaborwa airport by Susanne, Miller and John. We had a meal and did some shopping so by the time I arrived at camp it was dark. In the morning I could see the improvements that are being made to the camp for future tourists. It will be a stunning place to go for a holiday.

Tuesday morning it was straight to work with the morning feeding of the meerkats, mongoose and the owls. The rest of the week has gone so quickly, morning and evening feeding are regular duties and in between we have been painting the outside of the new lounge at camp. How many volunteers have had to paint black stripes and white dots? We had a day in Tzaneen on errands and shopping.

The highlight of the week was a game drive with Andre to the new farm to see the elephants. We eventually found them and could hear them moving through the bush and then as we stopped on the road they crossed a few metres in front of us. They did look so relaxed and not bothered by our presence.

Friday morning we all witnessed the arrival of the baby rhino. It is really good to be seeing him settling in and bonding with John who will be his carer. He looks like he is doing well despite his injury and the trauma he has been through.

This week we will be finishing the painting and generally cleaning up the lounge area now that the builders have finished but this is SanWild, anything could happen.
