Dive into the burrow!

Barbara Murphy, another volunteer will be arriving at SanWild today. She is from the United States as well. Morning while driving to office around 7.00 AM we wanted to check for Bliksem if he was in open or in the enclosure and to our surprise he was back in his enclosure. When we went to feed him in his enclosure, we saw some scratch marks on his upper body and we immediately knew he was outside the enclosure during the night.

As I approach the clinic to take out the 3rd Meerkat mother, I saw her nails stuck in the cloth. I removed her and released her in open. After this happened 3rd time since yesterday, we decided to remove the loose threads of cloth that was in her cage. Hopefully this should not happen again else we will have to put her in some other enclosure. Afternoon I spent some time with other Meerkat family and got some great photos from pretty close. They also came very close to me today and infact started playing with my shoes. Meerkats have very toes and nails which enable them to dig out the insects, small scorpions hiding just below the surface. They are very skilled at digging. Their teeth are very sharp and can slice thru the meat easily and for their size they seem to be powerful and formidable. Meerkats are very fast and can run really quick. That is Meerkat’s THE defense mechanism against predators. As soon as they see a predator, they run at a lightning pace and just dive into the burrows.

Afternoon we drove to Phalaborwa Airport to pick up Barbara and had dinner at a restaurant in Phalaborwa downtown. I had one of the best veg burgers ever.

I went to bed early.
