Elephants enjoying life at SanWild

I arrived on Thursday afternoon after having spent 6hours at Johannesburg airport. On our way to SanWild I had the usual feeling of “coming home” and I couldn’t wait to pass the entrance gate and finally be back! Unfortunately it was already almost dark when we got to camp but I could already see that the camp has changed a lot, I couldn’t wait to see it in the daylight. The next morning I was able to see all the changes and I have to say that they did a great job. It is even greener than before and there are lots of new plants all around the camp. The game drive vehicle is stunning; they did a wonderful job in modifying the old bakkie. The kitchen area and the living room have changed a lot, it almost looks like a different place. The little bar is very nice and they even have a fireplace in the living area.

After the usual morning feeding we picked up Zagaria who was cutting up a cow somewhere close to the office because it was feeding day for the lions. We first drove to Lutalo’s pride and it was amazing to see Bombi again, it’s incredible how he gets bigger and bigger. After that we drove over to the other lions and the wild dogs and even after so many times that I’ve done the feeding, it’s still something very special for me.

Later that afternoon Andre took us on a game drive and of course we were trying to find the elephants! We found them after a while and I’m so happy to see them enjoying their lives at SanWild. When I last saw them it was shortly after the relocation and we didn’t go close at that stage. But this time we were only about 15 metres away from them and they didn’t seem to mind our presence. I had never thought that they would feel that comfortable and safe in such a “short” time. It’s probably the other animals telling them that they are safe now and that nobody will harm them anymore!!!

Miller and I had a lovely evening talking about “good old times” while we were playing Domino and listening to the beautiful African bush sound!
